WARNING - LOWHEAD DAM AT HUMBOLDT REQUIRES PORTAGE
This float begins below the Rutland Dam with carry down access available at the Rutland Wildlife Area on the south side of the river. The access rod into this area is rough and is recommended only with a high clearance vehicle. Entry into the river at Rutland can also be gained on the north side of the river at Rose Mill Park but can be difficult due to the steep limestone outcroppings. Entry should be made at least 100 feet downstream of the dam. the first mile f this float is characterized by limestone ledges. At 3 1/2 miles, paddlers pass under the historic Berkhimer Bridge which is also the unofficial start point of Lake Nokomis, an impoundment created by Reasoner Dam. Concrete boat ramps for exit are present at Oxbow Park (4 miles), Sheldon Park (4.5 miles) and Lake Nokomis Park (6 miles). Starting at Berkhimer Bridge, paddlers will encounter many homes and potentially motorboat traffic. EXIT AT LAKE NOKOMIS PARK BOAT RAMP IS REQUIRED FOR PORTAGE AROUND REASONER DAM.
